New whitepaper available: vSphere Metro Storage Cluster Recommended Practices (6.5 update)

Advertise here with BSAI had many requests for an updated version of this paper, so the past couple of weeks I have been working hard. The paper was outdated as it was last updated around the vSphere 6.0 timeframe, and it was only a minor update. I looked at every single section and added in new statements and guidance … [Read more...]

VMs not getting killed after vMSC partition has lifted

Advertise here with BSAI was talking to a VMware partner over the past couple of weeks about challenges they had in a new vSphere Metro Storage Cluster (vMSC) environment. In their particular case they simulated a site partition. During the site partition three things were expected to happen: VMs that were impacted by … [Read more...]

vMSC and Disk.AutoremoveOnPDL on vSphere 6.x and higher

Advertise here with BSAI have discussed this topic a couple of times, and want to inform people about a recent change in recommendation. In the past when deploying a stretched cluster (vMSC) it was recommended by most storage vendors and by VMware to set Disk.AutoremoveOnPDL to 0. This basically disabled the feature … [Read more...]

Stretched Clusters: Disable failover of specific VMs during full site failure

Advertise here with BSALast week at VMworld when presenting on Virtual SAN Stretched Clusters someone asked me if it was possible to “disable the fail-over of VMs during a full site failure while allowing a restart during a host failure”. I thought about it and said “no, that is not possible … [Read more...]

vSphere Metro Storage Cluster with vSphere 6.0 paper released

Advertise here with BSAI’d already blogged about this on the VMware blog, but I figured I would share it here as well. The vSphere Metro Storage Cluster with vSphere 6.0 white paper has been released. I worked on this paper together with my friend Lee Dilworth, it is an updated version of the paper we did in … [Read more...]

VPLEX Geosynchrony 5.2 supporting up to 10ms latency with HA/DRS

I was just informed that as of last week VPLEX Metro with Geosynchrony 5.2 has been certified for a round trip (RTT) latency up to 10ms while running HA/DRS in a vMSC solution. So far all vMSC solutions had been certified with 5ms RTT and this is a major breakthrough if you ask me. Great to see that EMC spent the time … [Read more...]

I didn’t even realize this, but just found out that the session Lee Dilworth and I did at VMworld on the subject of vSphere Metro Storage Clusters can actually be viewed for free on youtube! There are some more sessions up on youtube, so make sure you have a look around! "VMworld session on vSphere Metro Storage … [Read more...]

Using IP Based vMSC storage and the Distributed Switch with 5.1?

There is something you might want to look at when you are using an IP based vMSC storage solution… One of our customers recently ran in to an issue where a fail-over went wrong. They recently were running vSphere 5.1 and used the Distributed Switch. When the vSphere Metro Storage Cluster needed to fail-over, in … [Read more...]

Disable “Disk.AutoremoveOnPDL” in a vMSC environment!

Last week I tweeted the recommendation to disable the advanced setting Disk.AutoremoveOnPDL in a vSphere 5.5 vMSC environment: If you are upgrading to 5.5 in a vMSC environment, please for now set “Disk.AutoremoveOnPDL” to “0”. So that it is disabled. — Duncan Epping (@DuncanYB) October 28, 2013 Based on this … [Read more...]

EMC VPLEX and Storage DRS / Storage IO Control

At VMworld various people asked me why VMware did not support the use of Storage DRS and Storage IO Control in a VPLEX Metro environment. This was something new to me and when someone pointed me to a KB article I started digging. When discussing it with the various teams the following is what we concluded for EMC … [Read more...]
